SILABFA is a web-based Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) developed by Italy’s Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale of Abruzzo and Molise (IZSAM) to modernize veterinary and public-health laboratories in Africa. First presented in 2009 and officially endorsed by SADC in 2011, the system digitizes the entire diagnostic workflow—from sample reception to reporting—supporting laboratory accreditation, epidemiological surveillance, and rapid outbreak alerts. Tailored to African veterinary contexts, it enables interoperability with national animal/farm traceability systems, FAO’s EMAI outbreak-sampling platform, and external antimicrobial resistance (AMR) reporting systems, while offering a multilingual mobile app for field sample collection. SILABFA improves data accuracy, productivity, and collaboration by organizing and standardizing diagnostic activities and harmonizing test reports. Backed by FAO and USAID funding since 2013, it underpins regional laboratory networking and One-Health early warning strategies. By the end of 2021, the system was operating in 45 laboratories across 18 African countries, with some sites using a streamlined variant known as SLIMS.
