Summary
Rwanda is transitioning to a unified electronic health information system to enhance data management, which is currently challenged by paper forms and various electronic platforms. This fragmentation impacts data quality and integrity. To resolve these issues, the Rwanda Health Information Exchange system has been developed, employing the Open Health Information Exchange architecture to facilitate synchronized data entry and reporting, reducing errors and expediting reporting times. A key component of this initiative is the implementation of an interoperability layer that enhances connectivity among different point-of-service systems, including EMRs, DHIS2, and laboratory information systems. The primary health focus areas include communicable diseases, among others.
