The Kala-azar tracker is a digital solution initiated by the Directorate General of Health Services to enhance the detection, reporting, and management of Visceral leishmaniasis in endemic regions. This system addresses issues faced by traditional paper-based methods, such as delays and incomplete records, which can result in missed diagnoses and follow-ups. By allowing frontline health workers to register suspected and confirmed cases in real time and track patient progress, the tracker improves data accuracy, reduces reporting delays, and aids program managers in monitoring trends and high-risk areas. The platform, built on DHIS2, functions as a web-based system within government health facilities, ensuring standardized reporting and case management. Health assistants use the DHIS2 mobile capture application to collect follow-up and geolocation data during field visits, enhancing coordination between community health workers and medical facilities. Overall, the Kala-azar tracker supports earlier diagnosis, better treatment adherence, and improved surveillance in Bangladesh. Plans to enhance the system by introducing new features aligned with updated guidelines are set for implementation by 2026, aiming to further improve surveillance and follow-up for communicable diseases targeting health professionals and rural health structures.
