Summary
ES·pera transforms fragmented official data regarding Spain's public healthcare waiting lists into clear, comparable visualizations that are linked to their sources. This tool aids citizens, journalists, and researchers in understanding access delays across various regions, hospitals, and specialties. It maintains a national dashboard that includes all official waiting list data from Spain and its autonomous communities, regularly updating the datasets in line with new releases from official sources. Each visualization retains the relevant source, period, and methodological information. Additionally, ES·pera plans to expand its coverage at the hospital and specialty levels through 2026, targeting the general population in the health sector.

Challenges

Official waiting-list data are fragmented across national and regional portals, published on different schedules and in changing PDF or spreadsheet formats. Definitions, patient perimeters and aggregation levels can differ, so apparently similar indicators are not always directly comparable. Historical files and stable identifiers are also inconsistently preserved.

Recommendations

Link every visualization to its official source, period and scope; keep the nationally comparable series separate from regional administrative data when methodologies differ; automate ingestion while manually validating schema and perimeter changes; show missing periods explicitly; and preserve historical releases so users can audit changes over time.
