Summary
The NIGHT-LIGHT initiative, part of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO), aims to bridge the "data gap" in global sustainable development by transforming raw night-time satellite imagery into actionable intelligence. It was set up to support the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by using night-time light remote sensing. It provides near real-time assessments of power outages and infrastructure damage during conflicts or natural disasters, which helps humanitarian agencies allocate aid more effectively. Additionally, NIGHT-LIGHT data identifies areas with high exposure to Artificial Light at Night (ALAN), linked to disrupted sleep, depression, and metabolic diseases. The initiative supports research on health risks associated with light pollution, including increased cancer incidences, insomnia, and cardiovascular issues. By producing global Light Pollution Maps, it aims to enables municipalities to implement policies that reduce light pollution, ultimately protecting human biological rhythms and local ecosystems. Overall, the NIGHT-LIGHT initiative addresses poverty assessment, disaster response, light pollution mitigation, and public health monitoring, focusing on environmental health for the general population.
