Summary
AquaWatch (AQUAWATCH) is a global initiative and an Australian mission dedicated to real-time monitoring, reporting, and forecasting of water quality. It combines in-situ sensors and Earth observation satellites, which use advanced cameras to detect the color signatures of various water properties, such as chlorophyll and sediment levels. This allows for comprehensive coverage and insights that ground sensors alone cannot provide. Data from both sources is analyzed using cloud-computing, artificial intelligence, and environmental modeling to create predictive forecasts, akin to a "weather forecast for water quality." AquaWatch automatically logs data and issues real-time alerts when water quality thresholds are exceeded, facilitating swift action from environmental managers or farming teams. The primary objective is to offer timely and accurate information to enhance the management of freshwater and coastal resources, thereby protecting human health, ecosystems, and industries reliant on water, such as aquaculture and tourism. It also serves as an early warning system for hazards like toxic algal blooms, contamination incidents, and blackwater events, targeting the general population.
