The OpenMRS implementation across 18 hospitals, led by Crystal Technology Bangladesh Ltd., is a key digital health initiative aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery through the adoption of OpenMRS, an open-source electronic medical record (EMR) platform. The project seeks to transition from paper-based systems to a standardized, digital solution that improves the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of health services.

By introducing a unified EMR system, the project enables healthcare providers to access real-time, comprehensive patient information across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services. This supports better clinical decision-making, enhances continuity of care, and reduces errors. At the same time, it streamlines hospital workflows—such as registration, clinical documentation, and reporting—leading to improved operational efficiency and reduced administrative burden.

The initiative also strengthens health information management by ensuring standardized data collection, automated reporting, and improved data quality. These enhancements enable hospital administrators and government authorities to utilize timely and reliable data for planning, monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making. Furthermore, the system is designed to support interoperability and integration with national digital health platforms, contributing to a more connected and coordinated health ecosystem in Bangladesh.

Capacity building of healthcare workers and IT personnel is an integral component of the project, ensuring sustainable system use and local ownership.
