The PeriWatch Vigilance project is an innovative initiative launched by Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, a U.S.-based children's hospital, in collaboration with PeriGen, a software solutions firm. This project aims to enhance maternal and fetal monitoring in Malawi through the implementation of the PeriWatch Vigilance system. This AI-powered technology continuously analyzes crucial health data, including maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate, and labor progression. By providing real-time insights and alerts, PeriWatch Vigilance seeks to prevent childbirth-related complications and deaths, thereby improving care for over 7,000 annual deliveries in a region with high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. The primary objective of the PeriWatch Vigilance project is to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by using AI-powered monitoring to enhance care and interventions during childbirth. The project started on March 10, 2021, and is currently in the pilot project/testing phase, focusing on pregnant women in Malawi. The intervention involves the use of software and artificial intelligence for decision support in maternal and child health. This project represents a significant advancement in standardized obstetric care in challenging healthcare environments, marking an important step towards improving health outcomes for mothers and their newborns in Malawi.
