Summary
Safe blood is essential for the treatment of various critical health issues, including postpartum hemorrhage, childhood malaria, severe anemia, trauma, and surgical procedures. To address this need, the Blood Safety and Supply Program (BSSP) has developed the Blood Donation Information System (BSIS), an open-source platform designed for managing donor and donation data throughout the transfusion process. This system is specifically created for resource-limited blood services and supports AfSBT accreditation. Its implementation follows international best practices, with an emphasis on enhancing local capacity for the efficient use, management, and maintenance of the platform. The health focus areas associated with this initiative include communicable diseases, emergencies, injuries, and maternal and child health.
