Summary
The Registre Électronique de Consultation (REC) Maternité is an application used in maternity services in Burkina Faso to digitize key reproductive health protocols. It covers prenatal care, deliveries, postnatal consultations, post-delivery or abortion care, as well as family planning. The solution ensures compliance with clinical protocols, facilitates secure data collection and transmission, and improves patient follow-up thanks to an automated SMS reminder system. Since its deployment in 2019, REC maternity has been used in 26 of the country's 70 districts, with gradual expansion planned towards nationwide use. The application, which works using HL7 FHIR and other technologies, aims to improve quality of care and continuity of services by offering structured and rapid access to patient records. The program is supported by the Direction de la Santé Familiale (DSF), the Direction des Systèmes d'Information (DSI)/TDH, and Dimagi, with the ambition of evolving maternity services by 2026 for pregnant women, urban and rural adults. Areas covered include maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, and other primary healthcare services. The CDR is also open source software.
