Summary
Nigeria continues to grapple with significant maternal and child health challenges, marked by some of the highest mortality rates in the world. Despite ongoing attempts to enhance healthcare access, the country still faces issues stemming from outdated data systems and a reliance on paper-based microplanning. To combat these challenges, the GeoST4R project was launched, integrating geospatial technology into healthcare microplanning.
GeoST4R modernizes the planning process by transitioning from traditional paper systems to digital platforms with real-time data, enabling health workers to pinpoint service delivery gaps and extend outreach to remote, underserved populations. The project successfully trained 275 health workers and involved stakeholders in updating baseline data and mapping outreach sites. This initiative resulted in notable enhancements in health data, adding 922 new settlements and revising details for 616 settlement names and 73 facility names. Additionally, the intervention significantly boosted healthcare outcomes, including increased contraceptive uptake, skilled birth attendance, and immunization coverage, demonstrating the efficacy of geospatial tools in health planning.
Key objectives of the project include improving the quality and accessibility of health data through a centralized geo-data bank for real-time decision-making, identifying "zero-dose" children and underserved regions, optimizing resource allocation to meet the greatest needs, building technical capacity among healthcare workers and officials, and ultimately enhancing health indicators related to maternal and child health.
