Summary
The Snapp project is a mobile snake recognition application initiative aimed at developing an app that can identify reptiles through a simple photo. The app will utilize geolocation to direct users to the nearest medical facility equipped with the appropriate antivenom. Additionally, it will provide essential first aid measures to be taken while awaiting treatment. This project is designed to assist snakebite victims and clinicians in urgent and reliable snake identification situations.
The project started on May 3, 2018, and is currently in the pilot/testing phase. It targets a wide range of users, including health professionals, children under 5, adolescents (12 to 18), children (5 to 11), and adults (18+). The intervention involves the use of software and artificial intelligence for decision support in injury management.
Key outcomes of the project include the development of an artificial intelligence model to identify snakes from across the world, presenting opportunities and challenges for global health and herpetology. Additionally, a scoping review on the practices of communities and healthcare providers confronted with snakebite across the world has been conducted, providing valuable insights for the app's development and implementation.
