OpenStreetMap Uganda (OSM Uganda), in partnership with the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), created community landmark maps and gazetteers to support health workers in rural Uganda with patient tracing. This initiative was a response to the challenges encountered during cholera outbreaks, which made tracing patient origins difficult. OSM Uganda utilized OpenStreetMap tools to map buildings, roads, and place names in the Kisoro and Zombo districts. Health workers received training on using mapping applications to identify key landmarks, and community maps were developed using QGIS. The resulting data is now available on OpenStreetMap for decision-makers. Future plans aim to integrate this information with the DHIS2 platform to enhance public health interventions through real-time data insights.
