Malawi is prone to annual public health emergencies, exemplified by Cyclone Idai in March 2019, which impacted over 922,900 individuals and displaced 86,000. Following the disaster, the Directorate of Disaster Affairs Management (DoDMA) led the initial response and a post-disaster needs assessment, highlighting gaps in pre-disaster health surveillance. While some improvements in surveillance were noted during the response phase, significant deficiencies persist. Key recommendations include better coordination, enhanced supervision, and effective early warning systems. The Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System (IDSR) was implemented, with efforts to enhance weekly reporting through the DHIS2 platform. Additionally, the One Health Surveillance Platform (OHSP), launched in 2019, aims to bolster real-time surveillance and has been adapted for COVID-19 response, supported by various organizations.
