Safe blood is crucial for the treatment of conditions such as postpartum hemorrhage, childhood malaria, severe anemia, trauma, and surgical procedures. The Blood Safety Strategy Program (BSSP) has developed the Blood Safety Information System (BSIS), an open-source tool designed to manage donor and donation data throughout the transfusion process. Aimed at resource-limited blood services, BSIS facilitates accreditation by the African Society of Blood Transfusion (AfSBT). Its implementation emphasizes adherence to international best practices while strengthening local capabilities for effective system management and maintenance. Key health focus areas include injuries, communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and emergencies.
