STELAB is Burkina Faso's national platform for the digital management of laboratory results, initially developed to monitor cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples in the fight against meningitis. It has since been extended to other epidemic diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. STELAB guarantees sample traceability, secure transmission of results to healthcare institutions, and standardized reporting, improving the quality and responsiveness of the surveillance system. The platform is deployed nationwide, involving district, regional and reference laboratories, and uses a proprietary architecture compatible with HL7 (REST) to gradually integrate into the OpenHIE ecosystem. Work is currently underway to ensure interoperability with other systems, such as DHIS2, HIV/TB trackers and regional surveillance platforms. Developed by Davycas International, STELAB has an estimated annual cost of between 60,000 and 80,000 USD for hosting, maintenance and user support. It is managed by the Laboratoire National de Santé Publique, with technical and financial support from WHO, CDC Atlanta and USAID. STELAB's objective is to strengthen national epidemiological surveillance by 2026 by ensuring traceability, secure transmission and integration of laboratory results into health systems for all populations, including both rural and urban areas.
