The Bliss4Midwives project, part of the TNO BLISS program, aims to develop a portable, modular diagnostic device for midwives in Ghana. This suitcase-like device combines existing point-of-care diagnostics to enable on-the-spot testing for pregnancy complications such as (pre)eclampsia. Equipped with a tablet screen and software, the device provides user instructions and clinical decision support, including recommendations for hospital referrals. The project plans to produce 10 prototypes and train at least 20 midwives in their use. These devices will be tested on at least 500 pregnant women in Ghana to assess their effectiveness. The initiative, running from January 1, 2015, to October 12, 2017, is a pilot project focusing on antenatal care and clinical decision support systems. Supported by the Ghana Health Service and the Association of Church Development Projects, Bliss4Midwives targets improving sexual and reproductive health in rural settings. Research and publications related to the project highlight its impact on antenatal care and the experiences of pregnant women using the integrated diagnostic and decision support device.
