Summary
During the pandemic, South Sudan struggled with misinformation about COVID-19, resulting in widespread ignorance. Although 60% of the population had access to radio, low listening habits and language barriers limited effective communication. To combat this issue, Blue Messenger Bicycles were introduced, which are fitted with solar panels, megaphones, and GPS trackers to relay COVID-19 messages in local languages throughout Juba and Wau. Each bicycle can reach approximately 200 households daily, ultimately impacting about 4,000 households and 24,000 individuals with essential information. This initiative fosters two-way communication, allowing for community engagement and feedback, and includes involvement from all age groups, including children and the elderly. In 2020, it was recognized as the best innovative solution for addressing COVID-19 misinformation. The health focus areas addressed include health promotion, maternal and child health, vaccination/immunization, injury prevention, communicable diseases, mental health, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and sexual and reproductive health.
