Summary
This project investigated the potential of personal sensing technologies to enhance individual wellbeing, particularly in the context of the rising popularity of the Quantified Self movement. With millions using wearables, smartphones, and apps to monitor aspects like nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress, the project aimed to understand how data visualization could increase users’ awareness of their behaviors, often leading to positive lifestyle changes. It focused on how habits such as eating breakfast, daily self-weighing, and wellness reminders contribute to sustained health improvements. By partnering with various stakeholders, the project conducted participatory experiments to examine the adoption of sensing devices, acceptance of persuasive recommendations, and the maintenance of healthy behaviors through gamification and motivational design. Combining user-centered design with practical trials, the project uncovered insights into the psychological and behavioral factors that influence long-term engagement with these technologies. Its findings exemplified how emerging sensing methods could be leveraged for real-world wellness and personal health applications. The primary goal was to explore how these technologies and motivational strategies could promote healthier behaviors in obese and diabetic patient to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
