Telemedicine is being implemented in Tanzania as part of a pilot project within the IDA-financed Regional Communications Infrastructure and eGovernment Project (RCIP), which began in June 2016. The initiative focuses on e-referral, e-radiology, and e-consultation, having installed necessary ICT systems, including video conferencing capabilities across eight locations. Training sessions were conducted prior to the launch of each telemedicine system. The broader RCIP project, initiated in June 2009, aims to expand broadband network accessibility, reduce international costs, and enhance government efficiency and transparency through various eGovernment applications. This project is designed to improve healthcare services in Tanzania, with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and Muhimbili National Hospital as key beneficiaries. The telemedicine center is staffed by 12 emergency room specialists and connects several hospitals via broadband, targeting the general population with a focus on Primary Health Care.
