Summary
The increasing number of presentations to Emergency Departments (EDs) has led to negative health outcomes globally. To mitigate this issue, a project was implemented at a metropolitan ED utilizing the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) service to divert nonurgent patients from the waiting room to virtual consultations. These patients were treated in a soundproof room next to the waiting area. The project tracked the rate of successful patient diversions and subsequent ED presentations within seven days. A review of all re-presentations was conducted using a modified Institute of Healthcare Improvement framework, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of the diversion pathway and its safety through a clinical audit of adverse events. The focus areas of this initiative include emergencies and primary health care, targeting various populations such as adults, children, and adolescents, as well as healthcare professionals and structures.
